GRAND OPENING NEXT WEEK!

On Wednesday, March 27, the Coolidge Corner Theatre will unveil our 14,000 sq. ft. expansion, designed by award-winning architecture firm Höweler + Yoon. The $14 million project includes two new, state-of-the-art screens, a new lobby, and the Coolidge’s first-ever dedicated Education and Community Engagement Center. The project completes the transformation of the beloved local institution into a leading national center for film and culture. The expansion introduces an extended first-floor lobby, and above that, a 145-seat cinema (Moviehouse 5). A third floor houses Moviehouse 6 and the new Education and Community Engagement Center.

Beyond creating more spaces for screenings, the expansion will increase opportunities for educational and cultural programming, a core part of the organization’s mission. The Coolidge recently hired its first-ever director of education, who will oversee the expansion of existing adult film education programs and the launch of a new youth education initiative.

Today, as we prepare to open the doors on our new spaces, we’ve raised over 95% of our campaign goal. Thanks to a $500,000 match made possible by members of the Coolidge Board of Directors and other generous donors, every Campaign gift made between now and June 30 will be matched dollar for dollar. CONSTRUCTION IS OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY!

Construction officially started in November 2021 and we are anticipating a late 2023 opening date.

Work will occur on weekdays from approximately 7 am to 4 pm. Weekday matinees will be on hiatus during the construction, but otherwise the Coolidge will remain open for business as usual (7 days a week). To view showtimes or purchase tickets, please visit coolidge.org.

PARKING

Please note that access to the 12 spaces immediately behind the theatre, as well as the alleyway behind the S.S. Pierce building is currently restricted and will remain so throughout construction. The expansion project is a major undertaking so construction vehicles, trailers and refuse receptacles will be present during much of this time.

We understand that parking in Coolidge Corner can be challenging during the best of times. We encourage our audiences to walk, bike, use a ride-sharing service (such as Lyft or Uber), or take public transportation whenever possible. If you do plan to drive and are looking for additional parking options, we recommend trying the parking garage at the Courtyard Marriott on Webster Street or the public lot on Babcock Street.

DESIGN

Part of what makes the Coolidge so special is the unique character of our historic Art Deco theatre. We have worked closely with our architect (Höweler + Yoon) to ensure that the new space integrates with the existing space while putting a modern spin on the concept of Art Deco. Höweler + Yoon have created a thrilling design that carries us into the future and will serve generations to come; we are now working on interior finishes. With indoor ticketing, improved service areas, more screens, and new spaces for education and community events, it will still be the Coolidge you love—only better! Learn more about the design here
